This is actually the rift between America and Europe, at a place called Thingvellir. The photo is taken from the American side, with the mountains in the distance being Europe. The large flat area in the middle is the new land being formed as the two move apart at a rate of 2 metres per century, which is actually pretty fast by tectonic standards.

All images on this website have been shot using either a Canon S40 compact digital camera, or a Canon 20D DLSR. I'm something of a Canon fan. :) Most images have been post processed with Adobe Photoshop and the CurveMeister plugin. I thoroughly recommend CurveMeister, BTW. It's a great piece of software.
