Ned Kelly's death mask. When the condemed man had been hanged a mould was taken of his face, and a plaster mask taken from it. The result is a death mask, evidence that the bugger really was dead. I wonder if the hangman had trouble getting the noose over that snout...

There's loads of these death masks in the old Melbourne Gaol. In some cases an eyelash will have come away on the mould and transfered itself into the plaster. Lovely.

All images on this website have been shot using either a Canon S40 compact digital camera, or a Canon 20D DLSR. I'm something of a Canon fan. :) Most images have been post processed with Adobe Photoshop and the CurveMeister plugin. I thoroughly recommend CurveMeister, BTW. It's a great piece of software.
