The Merchandise Mart, built in 1931, which at 4 million square feet is the biggest commercial office building in the world. The only larger office building is the Pentagon in Washington D.C., which is, of course, a government building. The Merchandise Mart was built by the Marshall Field wholesale company. When Marshall Field hit hard times in 1945, Joe Kennedy bought this building for ten dollars.
