The canyons are just cracks in the rock from the outside. Note the lack of crowds! We kept bumping into one lone girl and her dog - Liz and Tigger - who was among the nicest people we met on our USA trip. She even left us a couple of beers underneath our car back at the carpark! Richard did tell me that the people who come out here are a breed apart from your regular American tourists.
