Kalgoorlie and the Goldfields

In October 2004, Tina and I, accompanied by Joerg and Iris, headed east from Perth into the desert. 7 hours later we emerged in the town of Kalgoorlie, the centre of the West Australian Goldfields region. This area has been populated for over 100 years, since gold was found here towards the end of the 19th century. There's still gold here, hence the 30,000 people and the huge open cut gold mines. One day the gold will run out and it will all return to just plain desert, but until then it's a really interesting place.
